Twitter was all a flutter today with the news that Apple iBooks censors have gone a bit bonkers. Continuing it’s efforts to block ‘adult’ content from the iTunes App Store after removing 6000 ‘sexy’ apps without warning, the company has turned to ebooks in its iBookstore now. Case in point, Apple’s word filter has taken issue with ‘sperm.’
As BoingBoing points out, Apple blocked out the word ‘sperm’ in a description for Herman Melville’s Moby Dick on iBooks. They’re talking about a WHALE here people.
As you can see the screenshot below they’ve replaced “sperm” with “S***m”. Now I am an Apple fanatic and have been using Macs for over 20 years now (yes, I’m old). But this is ridiculous. Seems a little too Big Brother/1984 to me, which is rather ironic don’t you think?
I shudder to think what they’ll do with my book, FREE LOVE – True Stories of Love and Lust on the Internet. I imagine it will be full of #%*^, @*$$!, ^&*@, and &^#$ references. IF it even gets into the iBookstore at all given the somewhat provocative nature of the book. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Watch this space. Meanwhile, my book is currently available on Amazon for the Kindle, iPhone and Blackberry formats (print version coming soon). With all the dirty words intact.
